Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are disinfection by-products that result from chlorination of natural organic matter in drinking water. There have been concerns over possible carcinogenic effects of HAAs. Studies have been done to investigate the stability and biodegradation of HAAs in the presence of biologically active carbon (BAC), such as the kind found in water filters. BAC effectively removed milligram-per-liter–level HAAs that had been elevated in dechlorinated drinking water. In addition, granulated activated carbon (GAC) also removed HAAs, through a combination of carbon adsorption and biodegradation.
