June 18, 2010, Newsletter Issue #219: Making Sure You Know What You Are Drinking

Tip of the Week

Bottling filtered water from your own home is the best way to stay in control of the quality of water that you and your loved ones consume. When you install a water filter system in your home, you can choose a model that provides effective filtration for a wide variety of contaminants. Everyone's water supply contains chlorine, but the other contaminants in the water that comes into your home are closely tied to the types of pollutants that are problematic in your particular region.

Because there are so many different types of water supply contaminants, even filtered water can be very different from one place to another. When you install a multistage water filter system in your home, such as one of the high quality models available from Aquasana, you can be confident that your tap water is as clean and free from contaminants as possible. When you drink filtered water from sources other than your own home, you have no way of knowing exactly what types of contaminants might still be lurking in the water.

For example, if you drink filtered water from the home of a friend who uses a pitcher filter, you can be confident that the water you are drinking is less chlorinated than plain tap water. However, this type of filtration device isn't designed to remove MBTE, Trihalomethanes (THMs), or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. If you don't want to consume these substances at home, it stands to reason that you also want to avoid them in other places.

All filtered water is not the same. The only way you can know exactly what you are drinking is to filter and bottle it yourself. Make sure that all of the water you drink has been passed through your home multi-stage filtration system. By bottling filtered water from your own home, you can exert control over the quality of water you and your family members consume even when not at home.

Do You Need A Shower Filter?

While everyone might not "need" a shower filter, everyone can certainly benefit from using a quality shower water filtration system.

People with respiratory problems, skin disorders or people who live on water systems that use chlorinated surface water, and most do, certainly should use shower filters.

Asthma, bronchitus, eczema and many other common ailments are very negatively affected by inhalation and absorption of chlorine and other chemicals while showering. Breast, colon and bladder cancer have all been linked to exposure to chlorine from drinking and shower water.
"Cancer rates for people on chlorinated water systems is 93% higher than for those on non-chlorinated water systems..." U.S. Council On Environmental Quality

Shower filters also offer great cosmetic benefits. Chlorine robs the skin and hair of their natural protective oils and "friendly bacteria", causing dryness, premature aging and many other potential health and asthetic problems.

Shower filters are easy to install, easy to use... and can be a very healthful and enjoyable addition to our daily lives.
