How can I be sure that there aren't trace quantities of MTBE in my drinking water?

Removing MTBE from Your Water Supply

It's becoming increasingly common for groundwater to be contaminated with Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE), which is the oxygenated fuel additive most commonly used in gasoline that has been reformulated. MTBE is not meant for human consumption, and can pose a variety of problems when ingested. When even trace quantities of MTBE enter the drinking water supply, people who consume it often experience problems with dizziness and nausea. It is believed that consumption of water contaminated with MBTE can lead to long term kidney and liver problems.

Because of the increased occurrence of this type of water supply contamination, a MTBE water filter is in greater demand now than ever. It's particularly difficult to remove this contaminant from the water supply because is highly soluble. Carbon filters alone are not always able to capture MBTE. This means that this contaminants can still be present even in water that has been passed through an activated carbon filter. It's important to select a filter that combines additional filtration methods with the use of activated carbon, so you can be sure that your drinking water is as safe and free from contaminants as possible.
