If you want to protect your hands and fingernails, get into the habit of wearing rubber gloves when you do any cleaning around the house. Cleaning agents can be extremely harsh on both nails and hands. When exposed to water, your fingernails swell and then shrink back as they dry. The result is brittle nails that split easily. The skin on your hands, too, can become over-dry and crack.
