How can I tell if the water filter salesperson is trying to cheat me?

Portable Water Filter Scams

Beware of water filter salespeople at RV shows who offer to test your portable water filter for contaminants by dropping chemicals into your water. The salesperson in this scam will tell you that the chemical is specially designed to separate contaminants from the water to show you the filth in your water. The chemical used in this common fraud creates the same affect on any type of water.

Also beware of portable water filter salespeople who claim that their portable water filter will get rid of everything in your water. No water filter can filter everything. Fortunately, the vast majority of US water is safe to drink, so a general carbon portable water filter is sufficient.

Well, not totally true. If you read some water quality reports for your area, you will probably find that your tap water contains cryptosporidium. This bug, found in most tap water around the US, is tested for but not treated in many tap water supplies. Further, the EPA's own study estimates that 60% of the tap water systems in the US do not test their water and report in accordance with EPA standards. Don't believe me, read for yourself. We all THINK our tap water is safe, but when you start to dig, you will find out that simply a carbon filter IS NOT good enough.
