Modern day societies acknowledge that water is an essential tool in hygiene and beauty. In the past, however, this was not always the case. Water's beneficial effects were familiar to inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent thirty centuries ago. Prominent members of society already had baths and drainage systems for their homes during this period. Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans also bathed. During the Plague in 16th-century Medieval Europe, however, water was even regarded as dangerous. Popular belief held that water seeped through the skin's pores to deposit the germs it carried.
